New York City officials detail New Year’s Eve in Times Square security plan

NYPD Prepares for New Year’s Eve Protests

The NYPD and FBI are gearing up to secure Times Square as the city prepares for the New Year’s Eve celebration, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. A security perimeter will be established from Sixth Avenue to Eighth and from 41st Street to 57th, with officers conducting checks on individuals entering the area to ensure they are not carrying backpacks, duffel bags, or alcohol. The NYPD is also preparing to manage possible protests, with Mayor Eric Adams emphasizing the right to peaceful protest while also maintaining a peaceful environment for others celebrating the new year. The department has seen an increase in protests this year, with more than 450 protests held in New York City since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. Commanding Officer John Hart of the NYPD Intelligence Division assured that the department is prepared to handle protests and maintain the safety of the event.

The FBI has reported an increase in tips about potential threats following a Hamas attack on Oct. 7, but investigators have not identified any credible threats to New York City. On New Year’s Eve, agents at the FBI’s New York office will be monitoring cameras for potential dangers. With a surge in reported threats, the FBI’s assistant agent in charge, James Smith, highlighted the need for increased resources to investigate and ensure the legitimacy of these threats. Mayor Adams stressed that the NYPD has reviewed past incidents, such as a machete attack on two officers near Times Square last year, to remain prepared and focused on ensuring the safety of the event. In addition to deploying thousands of officers, the NYPD also plans to use drones for aerial monitoring. The department’s Counterterrorism Bureau will be on the lookout for potential risks, aiming to provide a safe and enjoyable New Year’s Eve celebration for all attendees.
