Federal judge OK’s new GOP-drawn congressional map in Georgia

Three States Confront Congressional Map Disputes

Washington – Recently, a federal magistrate in Georgia sanctioned a congressional map revised by the state’s Republican legislature after the first voting divisions were found to have been drawn in breach of federal voting rights law.

U.S. District Judge Steve Jones conveyed in a 15-page decree that the General Assembly adequately complied with his October assignment, which demanded the formation of a majority-Black congressional district in the western area of metro Atlanta. The endorsement of the new map, preserving Republicans’ 9-5 advantage for its congressional representation, establishes new limits to be employed in the 2024 election.
